I woke in the darkness slick with sweat and short of breath. I was not alone. That shadowed thing lurked in my doorway again. A blackness cut into the void of night.
It stepped forward. I tried to stir. My body would not move.
It drifted closer, growing huge, filling my entire world.
I could not fight. I could not flee. I could not even close my eyes. Before it I was small, helpless, lost.
It drew close and touched my face, tickling my cheek with icy breath.
I shivered. It smiled.
Hollow laughter echoed off the walls.
I tried to scream, but only managed silence.

You know, sometimes you read something, and it just resonates with where you're at--several times you're writing as done that. It happens to coincide with my up coming project; mind if I restack this with a little teaser for my "Methuselah Epistles"?
Maximilian, your poem took me back to my childhood and the times I lay in bed, half asleep and half awake with a waking nightmare moving like a jerky silent movie from the closet across the room from my bed toward me with a sort of stop action snapshots of horror coming closer.
