I stood upon the windswept shore, staring out into grey infinity. Out there, where sea and sky touched, one the churning mirror of the other, awaited a place so vast as to be beyond the ken of so small a mind as mine.
And yet her ever beckoning waves called to me. I longed for her touch and her cool, soothing embrace. I longed to plumb those chaotic depths from whence arose the very Earth at the beginning of all things. Who could say what secrets might await those with bravery enough to seek them?
I took a step. She reached for me. We met and her gentle caress put me at ease.
I waded further from the safety of the shore, that hallowed place of rock and stone. But from the sky came howling winds and freezing sheets of rain. She rose up, wild and raging. Great waves, white with foam, swept over me, pulling me out and under, into the depths, into the darkness. She was everywhere. The surface and shore were lost from sight and mind and hope. I struggled but was helpless before her might. Salt and sea filled my lungs. The churning maelstrom is all there was.
Whatever her secrets, they were not for one such as me to claim, for I am such a fragile thing.
I surrendered to her judgement, for I could do nothing else.
But as despair gave way to numbness and all began to fade, she spat me out.
I fled, passing from sand, to stone, to rolling green-clad hills. But even as I went, I heard the endless call of her sweetest song, beckoning me to return.
